Faux Flooring
Whether it’s vintage kitchen linoleum or the shiny marble floor of a courthouse, flooring establishes the tone for many sets. This foundation is one of the many details that coalesce into the mise en scène of a film– done well, flooring disappears into the background, never to be noticed. Real marble, wood, or tile flooring can be expensive and difficult to customize, so On Air Design has many faux options to fill in the gaps. We can print on a variety of substrates– both rolled and rigid– to create the perfect custom faux flooring solution for any set.
Faux Wood
Faux wood flooring adds a warm touch and unmistakable character. We have an extensive library of wood grain patterns to choose from and customize. Our design team can also create new wood grain patterns if needed to suit a particular set– and then print them on any of our wide variety of substrates. Linoleum or rigid MDF boards work well for durable flooring, while paper or vinyl adhesive are great choices when covering any furniture or vertical surfaces. Flexible substrates like paper can be printed with spot gloss, adding additional shine and dimension to the print. Pictured here are the faux wood parquet boards we created for the set of The Gray Man– read more about our flooring for this movie here!
Linoleum
When it comes to creating faux flooring, linoleum is a workhorse. This durable material can be printed with any custom design, including the many tile, terrazzo, wood, and marble patterns in our library. Our linoleum flooring substrate comes in 10-foot-wide rolls, meaning fewer seams when installed on set. Installation is a breeze, too– just roll it out on the floor. If needed, double-sided tape can be applied to keep the linoleum in place. Our linoleum is thick enough to withstand foot traffic, but thin enough to not cause a bump (and a disturbance in the shot) when camera rigs roll onto it.
Faux Marble
On Air’s library of faux marble patterns can be customized and printed on any of our substrates. If needed, our talented design team can create new marble patterns to match a particular set. Similar to faux wood, we can print these marble patterns on paper or vinyl adhesive for vertical surfaces, or linoleum or rigid boards for flooring that needs to withstand foot traffic. Here, our production team is creating faux marble boards for Presumed Innocent– the marble floors of the courthouse sets were created by the OA team using some marble patterns from our library, printed and routed in house.
Carpet
Not much faux here– our carpet substrate is real low-pile carpet that can be printed with a pattern of your choosing. Create an entirely custom carpet pattern, as in the hallway sets of American Horror Story: Hotel (shown below), or create a lookalike swatch to match an existing area. To create custom carpets, we print directly on top of the carpet fibers rather than the more permanent dye sublimation method (where the ink is dyed into the entire carpet fiber). Because of this, our carpets are a bit less durable than more permanent carpets, but it works well for situations where the shot is closeup enough that the audience would see the texture of the carpet fibers. Plus, the customization options are truly endless, thanks to our in-house design and print production teams.
