This Emmy-nominated Disney+ hit is loosely based on the children’s book series by the same name. The imaginative, adventurous story of The Mysterious Benedict Society’s second season takes place in an oddly nostalgic, retro time period. On Air Design was thrilled at the chance to provide several printed wallcoverings to bring production designer Cynthia Charette’s creative vision to life.
Keeping consistent with the first season’s color palette, blues and greens are primarily seen throughout the production. Having a target audience of tweens and early teens, it was important to immerse them in a vivid and stylized world. Taking place “somewhere” in Europe but filmed in Los Angeles, Charette recounts the importance of every detail as she was literally “bringing a storybook to life.”
On Air Design printed several vintage wallpapers that stand out in the series. Most noticeable are the custom recolored blue versions of our Pixie and Green Geo retro geometric patterns. These two wallcoverings gave certain sets an intentionally dated look, complementing other set design elements such as conversation pits and color block furniture, placing the viewer in a period set around the 1970s that is unique yet somehow comforting, too. A printed light wood grain was also used in a bedroom set, mimicking the look of wood-paneled walls popular in a similar era.
